Well it teaches you about slavery.The story is also told in a first person Night john is about this girl named Sarny, Sarny is a girl who's mother got sent south when she was three.people think that sarny is dumb but she was just born the wrong way . Sarny’s master is Clel Waller who sent Sarny’s real mom down south.Sarny calls waller names like horse crap. And her new mom is Dealie, Dealie was the person who helped deliver Sarny.And when Sarny was about seven or eight she met night john, night john came in a shackle. A shackle is a U shaped metal secured with a clevis pin or a bolt across the opening , or a hinged metal loop with a quick release locking pin mechanism.
Sarny’s job is to chew on tobacco leaves and spits in bugs to get them away from the flowers. At night Sarny sits and tries to remember everything she learned. At night Delie prays in a cooking kettle so the masters wont hear her.Waller also payed over 1000 dollars to get night john, he came naked in a wagon. Night john was all whipped and banged up. When the slaves ate they ate in a trough with animals. On the first night that Night John came he traded letters for tobacco with Sarny and if the masters found out they would get a body part cut off.Also there is a girl named Alice. Alice is a women who got raped and her skin was cut off.She also ran away twice the first time she got caught she tried to run and the dogs caught her.The second time Waller put her on the white house and got whipped.
Night John was successful with his plan of making a pit school for Sarny. He also kept his promise of coming back for sarny when he ran away. While John was gone sarny was making letters in the dirt from the letters john taught her.I would recommend this book to people who want to learn about slavery and what its like to be a slave.
